I confess that I didn't have much use for DW as a teen. After the sleekness of the SW and ST films, to my eye, DW had the production value of a high school play. I didn't know about stuff like the BBC not having any money or anything like that. I just tried to watch it and couldn't get into it.
So later, in 2005, when the Chris Eccleston version premiered, I was apprehensive. In fact, the ex had to coerce me away from the computer to come watch it. And I was blown away. I was a faithful fan immediately.
When I heard Eccleston was being replaced, I was concerned. He'd defined the role for me. But I grew to like David Tennant...then love him. And he became my favorite. (Sorry, Chris!). It broke my heart when he left.
I like Smith alright. He's just different, and not bad-different, but I still love DT the most.
And during the DT years, I began renting some of the original episodes from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Now that I'm older and have had the experience of watching this newer incarnation, I now have an appreciation for those older episodes that I didn't before. I confess I missed out on some really good stories back then, even if the special effects weren't so "special".
