Just finished it and my initial reaction was that, despite his protests to the contrary, Michael =must= have read at least some of the criticism of BTRW. This one is much more focused and coherent, which meant that despite the multiple plotlines (that were pretty much a necessity) it was a much easier read. I liked it a lot.
I agree that there was a HUGE hole with respect to Trip's exploding escape pod. I felt pretty cheated; honestly, it wasn't necessary to blow the thing up -- shades of TATV, anyone? -- and we didn't even get an
attempt at explanation. Until then, despite the fact that I could see the final "twist" coming a while off, I was thoroughly enjoying myself.
I'd like to see the explanation book that MM wants to write as well, but since a lot of press is calling TBTS the end of the relaunch, and since Pocket seems disinclined to take it any further, I'm not going to hold my breath. Instead, I think I'll keep an eye out for the fan fiction. While this was the biggest hole, it by far wasn't the only place that gave ficcers room for expansion.
