So, thank you Aquarius for making the assignments last night! Everyone should have gotten a pm with their assignment. You can use this thread to share, promote, talk about research - whatever!

I'm not making it against the rules to share which period you got, but it's totally up to you if you wish to share or not! I think I'm going to keep mine secret.

Okay, I got a time period that is not in my immediate purview of history. Anyone have resources that would help me get a feel for everyday life in, er, Ancient Civilizations? I've found a really good documentary on YouTube that should help some, but I need more -- including odd and interesting tidbits that could serve as a hook for my muses. (Guess I should check wtf_history on Livejournal, which I shall share with everyone here as well!)

Sure! The a lot of my bachelor's degree covers this. I even have a book entitled "Ancient Civilizations".

If you don't mind the fact that this is a resource for kids, it might be a good place to start sussing out what else you could Google for: Daily Life in Ancient Civilizations It covers most of the areas. For more advanced stuff, check out this: Eyewitness to History

Mine turned out to be The French Revolution and I'm excited about it. I already have a few ideas for moments - I just need a plot.

Is anyone here familiar with the expedition of Lewis and Clark and that period? It's an interesting event to be given, but hIstory was never my strong suit, so American history naturally leaves me completely baffled.

Egypt and the Ancient Near East Web Resources for Young People and Teachers from the Research Archives at the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago. OI is a fantastic museum for artifacts and the study of ancient Egypt and what is now Iran and Iraq.

Egypt's Golden Empire from PBS (your tax dollars at work).

Websites about ancient Egypt from Emory University. The museum at Emory is on my list for places to go in Atlanta. Haven't made it yet as I've figured out the light rail but not the buses.

Books: Undaunted Courage by Stephen E. Ambrose. Excellent historian (usually did World War II), but writes so that non-history majors will enjoy it.

Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery by Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns (book goes with Ken Burns' film). PBS website for this is here.

In the Footsteps of Lewis and Clark by Gerald S. Snyder for the National Geographic Society. NGS website is here.

I also have 2 books on medicine and the Lewis & Clark expedition.

A lot of the books Glory recommended are good sources, Mr. Smith.

I used to work at Thomas Jefferson's house, Monticello, in Charlottesville, VA, in their Education Department. he was the president who bought the Louisiana Territory and authorized the L&C Expedition. I had to learn details about that time period for my job, so if you have any questions, you can ask me too.

I live here, Mr. Smith! Sakakawea was native to my state, North Dakota. I'll try to round up some great resources for you!

Sounds like the MU to me, EntAllat, but then Madame DeFarge sitting beside the guillotine and knitting in the 1935 film version of Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities made a strong impression on me as a kid.
