I thought it might be fun to have a thread recommending movies.

So, I shall start.

I recommend my very proper mom's all time favorite movie, Saving Grace.

It was written by brilliant talk show host Craig Ferguson and he has a small part. It's the story of a proper British widow and active member of her garden club who discovers, after her husband dies, that her country estate has been mortgaged and she's broke.

Meanwhile, she discovers her gardener has been growing some pot plants in her greenhouse. She loves to garden, needs money. . .so. ..

It's a pot movie that you can watch with your mother.

Honeybee, I LOVE that movie.

In the realm of Sci-fi/Fantasy, I recommend Push. Mutants among normals, blah blah blah, but the approach is more like a continuation of the movie "Firestarter" than "X-Men".

But I have to say, Camila Belle freaks me out every time because I still remember her as little Sally from "Practical Magic"

Ah! I love, love, love Saving Grace! And yes, I did watch it with my mother. Fantastic movie.

Haven't seen Push, so I'll have to check that out.

Good god, I don't think I could pick one movie to recommend. It took forever to settle on one, so maybe I'll just come back each week and recommend another. But for now, The Shawshank Redemption is a good all around movie.

I'd recommend "The Expendables" ... but I suspect its a little too much "blowing shit up and random but awesome violence" for this crowd. :P

Although "Predators" kinda kicked ass too ... and it had the smoking hot Alice Braga in it ...

OMG I LOVE that kind of movie!! That was the action flick with, like, EVERYBODY in it, right??? Missed it at the theater. MUST see it. Honestly, for me, that's a better date movie than some romcom.

Well, movies like that (another off the top of my head would be "Smoking Aces") I call d**k flicks because they really are the opposite of chick flicks.

That being said... it was an AWESOME movie in its explosions and male bravado cliches. And I absolutely loved the comment as a particular person walked out of the church! I hear there are serious talks for a part 2.

And I think Smokin Aces had everyone in it - most all of the lessor known actors in it went on to much bigger things - including Chris Pine. And it was the film where Justin Timberlake proved he could act.

I've heard it compared to the Gen X film School Ties - which starred Brendan Fraser but had unknowns like Matt Damon, Chris O'Donnel, Ben Afleck and Anthony Rapp in smaller parts.

Now these are some recommendations I can get behind, even if I haven't yet had the pleasure. I have wanted to see The Expendables since I read the cast list, you just cannot beat an action movie with a cast like that. I don't think I've heard of anything that hot since The Forbidden Kingdom united Jackie Chan and Jet Li for some amazing action sequences that rival my personal favourite Hollywood martial arts fight; the umbrella sequence in Shanghai Knights.

Plus any continuation of a classic like Predator is automatically in my book of to-see, glad to have an assurance it's fairly good after the miss that was the two Alien vs Predator movies.

Recommendations, recommendations... I'll get back to you. My favourite movie of all time is probably xXx though, and I love really cheap creature features, so I'm not really the best person to go recommending good movies.

Oh, wait, I lied. Spirited Away I can recommend over and over again if anyone hasn't seen it, drop dead gorgeous movie in plot and aesthetics. Actually, anything by Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli is gold. I most highly recommend Grave of the Fireflies, though it follows two homeless kids in Japan during the Second World War and your heart will get broken.
