Favorite non Enterprise Trek

So, besides Enterprise, do you have a favorite Trek? I'm including all the other series, and the reboot.

I voted for TOS, since it was such a big tradition in my family. We went to see all the movies as a family, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture when we were on vacation in Buenos Aires.

DS9 for me, it was always the one I watched most often before I got back into Enterprise and I love the Dominion War arc and how the characters developed throughout. There was so much I loved about it, there's nothing boring or forgettable about any of the characters, they all had key storylines and even the villains were well-rounded three-dimensional people with whom you could sympathise.

TOS would definitely be third, though, as I remember watching that when I was a small child and loving everything about it. I'm so glad I found my way back to Trek.

I went with TOS. It was the first for me. While I was not yet born during the original run, my mother exposed me to syndication reruns through the womb! She and my father watched the show together all through her pregnancy, though my earliest memories of seeing it are from the high chair and the play pen!

After I was school age, our local station that showed Star Trek started showing it in two hour blocks that it marketed as "Mission: Star Trek" that ran from 7-9pm. I had the misfortune of having an 8: 30 bed time! After about a week of my crying and pouting and going to bed kicking and screaming (okay not literally on the kicking and screaming but I made it clear to my mom that I thought I was getting screwed on the deal!), my bedtime got pushed to 9pm--but only the nights that Star Trek was on! (Which meant, in an atypical reversal of most households, I had an earlier bed time Saturdays and Sundays, but that was the deal and I stuck to it, as far as I remember!)

It was during these "Mission: Star Trek" blocks that an announcer would come on during commercial breaks and give "fun facts" while clips of the show played. It was usually biographical information about cast members or anecdotes from the set or something to that effect. It was during one of these interludes that I learned of the "Trekkie movement," that there were other people as passionate about the show as I was (and keep in mind that here, I'm like, SEVEN!), and about the letter writing campaigns that saved Star Trek from cancellation not once but twice not too long before I was born. It was that moment, at that tender, impressionable age, that I decided that Trekkies had to be the absolutely coolest people on the planet because not only did they love the best show in the world, but they also knew how to get stuff done! Upon hearing about this, I had decided I wanted to be a Trekkie "when I grew up"--not yet realizing that at seven I already *was* one simply for my already-existing commitment to the show!

Remember, this is also the time period when our very first space shuttle was given the name Enterprise, and I remember watching its first flight on my grandma's living room floor in front of her big-assed console TV.

So, while the series Enterprise is what inspires me the most now, in a lot of ways TOS will always be numero uno with me, just because of how big of a part of my life it was so early on.

I have an older brother who developed a Kirk fixation when he was in Kindergarten. He would rush home from morning kindergarten and change into a Kirk shirt that my Mom had made him. His best friend would sometimes come over, sometimes in his Spock shirt.

I eventually got sucked into their play. I was often Nurse Chapel - or whatever other female needed playing. There was a little African American girl in the neighborhood, who got recruited to be Uhura.

This was all well after the series ended, and these were afternoon reruns. I think the first episode I was able to sit through was Trouble with Tribbles, natch.

So, the TOS films became a family tradition. We would always agree to go together, no matter what. Which was a huge deal since my brother is quite mentally ill and difficult to get along with. He didn't grow up to be a geek at all - but he still won't let anyone diss Trek.

I love each and every one of the Trek incarnations, including the reboot. Although a lot of my Trek friends would fall off with each incarnation, I just soaked up each and every one.

I picked DS9 only because of the fact it introduced me to a community that I'm still in touch with (which in turn had helped begin my 15+ year career and informed my graduate thesis) and to fandom in general. I also had a soft spot for Julian Bashir. Otherwise I probably would have picked TOS because it was the multi-generational favorite in my home while I was growing up and because it introduced me to the Star Trek novels.

I chose the reboot because Spock got the girl... Finally!

The Next Generation for me. Though TOS was my first introduction to Trek (sneaking out of my room to watch late night syndicated episodes and totally trying to figure out if I loved Kirk or Spock more), TNG was the show that really made me a trekkie.

But I just started watching DS9 -- the only Trek show that I hadn't watched all the way through -- so my opinion is subject to change.

I had to pick TNG because of all the series (except Enterprise, of course), I find it the easiest to watch over and over. Also, because of my work schedule when it was originally aired locally (at some bizarre time like 11 p.m. on a Friday night), I would tape the episodes. Some years later, after I was married, those tapes were the only thing that kept me sane when I was home with my kids as babies!

Side note: After TOS but before anything but the animated series had been out, one of my coworkers at my first real job after college had the last name Kirk. He had a son names James. I felt so sorry for that young man! He was named before TOS aired, then had to live with that name after it became popular.
Old enough to know better, but that's never stopped me before.

I've got to go with DS9 for pretty much the reasons Mr. Smith gave. Some say it's a darker Trek, but I guess I like dark. I don't have a "hate" on for any of the others, just that TOS (remastered) and TNG are both available here every weekday and yet that's not what I have on in the background while working. If DS9 got picked up, I would have it on.

The more I read of Mr. Smith's posts, the more I'm beginning to think we were twins separated at birth. Be afraid Mr. Smith, be very afraid!
