How Are You Spending Your New Year's Eve/Day?

Postby Aquarius » Fri Dec 31, 2010 7:39 am

So, for years I've been over the whole New Year's Eve bar night. Kinda pointless--all the clubs charge you three times as much to get in and all you get for it is a noisemaker and a sip of really crappy champagne.

These days, I'm part of the movies and board games set--assuming I don't just stay home to write. Going to my BFF's house to hang out with her and her sister and watch Enterprise until we hallucinate. Tomorrow we're going out to lunch, tonight she's cooking cornish hens.

What are you doing?

Staying home with hubby and the kids (who are too young to go out drinking). I fix what we call a party dinner. Basically, it's a buffet-style meal, and we graze all evening until the ball drops. Usually I fix things I don't do very often -- spinach pinwheels, shrimp cocktail, a spread for crackers, an Oriental-style cole slaw, and so on. We'll watch a little TV, maybe play some cards.

We don't drink much, ever since hubby was told, because of a medical condition, that his liver probably can't handle it.

Aquarius, I agree that you get charged three times as much at bar parties on New Year's Eve, and get a noisemaker and crappy champagne. Did that one year, and couldn't figure out what all the fuss about these parties was.

The cornish hens sound good. I haven't fixed those in ages.
Old enough to know better, but that's never stopped me before.

Working both jobs New Year's Eve and working 1 job New Year's. There are no holidays in the medical universe. In fact, I'm expecting "trauma center on a Saturday night" to start early, especially when it's the only level I for the entire state (not Illinois, obviously). The City Colleges' PBS station has a Mystery! marathon both days, so that is on in the background. I may see if the new buffet Chinese restaurant/sushi house in the village is open tomorrow. I'm such a party girl (not)!

Generally quietly...

I picked up some sushi and snacks yesterday at Sam's Club. We'll have those tonight before midnight. In the past we've also had Stilton cheese with French Sauternes or Port at midnight. Champagne is nice but really not a favorite.

Cornish Game hens do sound pretty good....

I've also looked at the November word prompt (PURE) and I've got an idea for a little one-shot for that. Got to watch an episode of ENT for reference...(darn...will just HAVE to do that... ) so there may be another story on it's way...

Regardless of how you spend this day/evening...be safe, have fun, and we'll see you in the NEW YEAR!

Like Aquarius, I got over the bar thing on New Year's Eve a long time ago. And there's a lot of illegal fireworks around there that terrify my older dog. That, plus icy roads - means I'm staying in.

But I'm looking forward to it.

Tomorrow, I will be grading papers for the online winter session class I'm teaching. Fun.

We just got back from our family outing at the Mall. The kids really enjoyed it...just spending time together. They got new books (Mum did too!) Charlotte has First Night Festivities tonight, but we're going to pass on them. Son and Banshee Girl run on strict schedules, and I'm sure the noise of the fireworks will really upset them.

So right now we're watching a Wiggles DVD marathon. LOL! And tomorrow, I'll probably be home, catching up on all my stuff and resting my achy joints.

Staying warm tonight. Seriously. It's hard to get it above 60 in my livingroom because of the winds and blizzards we've been in since Wednesday -- and going into Saturday. It's -8F outside atm.

Tomorrow morning I work a 9 hour shift. So when I get home, a little computer time, some dinner, and then bed before another 10 hour shift Sunday. Can't complain though, I haven't worked much since Christmas Eve!

We never partied much, so it's always a nice quiet bringing in. If there weren't a blizzard, we'd go to the bowling alley and partake of free food and games. Still may.

Yeah, I stayed in, like I do most years (I think I've only celebrated out once in the last 20 or so years), I'm not one for the nightlife, so new year gets the same treatment the same. Though I did manage to see in the new year, I even saw some fireworks off in the distance - don't know where it was though, it's all ocean out front???

May have been off a ship.

Around here, we have a group that climbs Pike's Peak with fireworks the day before. Each year, they set off fireworks from the peak. They're quite a distance away so even big bursts look the size of coins. Still, it's nice to ring in the New Year.

And I've finished my story.

Happy new year! Lots of inspiration for more wonderful stories!

- Yesterday, December 31th we ate some special "Old Year day"-food, at 12 o'clock lots of fire work and today: spending the day working in our new house.

In the meanwhile the only thing on television is music shows in all kind of variations - including lots of music from the 80-ties...great fun.
