Fan Vid Workshop?

Postby Aquarius » Sat Oct 02, 2010 2:19 pm

Just wondering if there was any interest here in making/learning to make fan videos?

I would love to try my hand at this, but I've never done it before. If someone experienced here is willing to share information and pointers, that would be great.

Otherwise, I might just start messing around with this on my own, and if other people want to learn,we can do the blind leading the blind.

When I made my two videos, it was a couple version of windows ago. I haven't played with the video editor much that has come with Windows 7... but it's not as user friendly as the older version. *grumbles*

I'd like to make a few more vids... but I'm also having problems with youtube. They took off the sound for one (for copyright stuff) and they disabled another because it had CBS material.

*bangs head against wall*

So I don't even know where to put the suckers! Any other hosting sites that you know of?

No, but I'll ask around.

What do you mean, because it had CBS material? Isn't it /all/ CBS material now?

Yeah, it seems like it gets randomly taken down for copywright infringement. I don't think it's the song. I can't remember the message I got the last time it happened, but it's been a couple years and I haven't bothered to try to put it back up again.

The one that keeps losing the song is because of the song. "You Must Love Me" sung by Madonna from Evita. I tried to repost that a month ago, and still had the same issue. So whatever.

Makes me gunshy to do more vids even though I enjoy it.

Hmmmm. When we get the full-service site launched, I'll maybe ask our technical adviser if there's a way we can store video content. If we post links to iTunes and Amazon with strong encouragements to go buy the songs/DVDs/whatevers, and have proper disclaimers, maybe they'll leave us alone.

I've been wanting to vid for a while now, I just haven't had the time or energy to learn something new lately.

Maybe this would help. I've certainly got several ideas in mind, and I know what I'd start with :D

I think vimeo is good alternative to youtube as far that kind of thing goes!

I would participate in a video workshop!

I've been learning iMovie 9 and have figured out how to import stuff from my camera, separate and add audio tracks, edit, and export and I think I'm at the point that I'm ready to try my hand at very first fan vid. (I've had a song and most of the visuals picked out for a long time now, but it's going to take a LOT of editing to get the timing right for it all.)

Besides, making a fanvid will help me learn this blasted thing inside and out and I need to for other, professional, reasons.

Nope. Unfortunately Vimeo specifically forbids the uploading of "fan vids". I'll do some digging and see if there's an alternative to YouTube for hosting vids.

BTW, I'm willing to lead this effort for a Fan Vid Workshop. I've used several types of video editing software, from the professional AVID system (years ago) to a handful of Windows-based ones to iMovie. And I've got friends in media production that I can turn to with questions.

I'm a moderator for the Video Workshop area now. If there's interest, let me know here and we can work out what y'all would like to accomplish in a video workshop and when would be a good time to organize one.

There's two possibilities for workshops here: Technical and Artistic.

Technical workshops could be focused on helping each of us learn to do X in our individual video editing software packages. I.e. how do I import video? Export? Detach the audio track? Add an audio track? Synch? Change from color to B&W? What settings should I use to export? Etc.

Artistic Workshops could be focused on offering feedback and critiques for what's been created.

I figure that we've all got a lot of other things going on so taking up a project is probably tough to fit into our schedules. Given that, I'm thinking we could start very small, with a series simple challenges at first that shouldn't take more than a half hour each to accomplish, with the goal learning our way around our individual video editing software packages before we move on to creating whole fanvids.

OR, our first workshop could be a group critique of various existing fanvids that are already out there.

Let me know how you feel about this, what you'd like to get out of a workshop and what your time commitment could be. (Also, what program are you going to use - if you already know that, don't worry about it if you don't - and what is your computer operating platform? Mac? Windows? What version?)
