Recently, I've had a lot of fun reading the TV site: TV Tropes.

Trip and Shran are both used as examples of the trope Ensemble Dark Horse.

Jonathan Archer, love him or hate him, did suffer from being a Creator's Pet and lots and lots of Character Shilling.

What's fun is that my 70-year-old mom is into Downton Abbey, and she was delighted to find out what a Creator's Pet was and what a Cousin Oliver was, because Bates and Cousin Rose fit those respectively. (It is rare for a Cousin Oliver to be an adult, but Rose fits that bill.) Also, my mom decided that the jazz singer Rose dates is definitely anEthnic Scrappy.

Nikki & Paulo on Lost were Scrappies.

According to TVTropes, T'Pol was definitely a Scrappy the first couple of seasons (and it sort of fits) but improved in the third and fourth season.
