Sherlock

So, I can't believe we don't have a thread.

I stayed up last night and watched the premiere on PBS. Pretty good, a little enamored of itself and the fandom homages might have gone a wee bit overboard. But, I think Sherlock and Watson's great chemistry was still there...though I'm fuzzy about who the big bad is this season.

Overall, I was disappointed. The chemistry between Holmes and Watson is still there, so I'll probably keep coming back, though.

Loved the addition of Amanda Abbington as Mary Morstan. There's a definite chemistry between Watson and Morstan, too (perhaps the fact that Mr. Freeman and Ms. Abbington have been together for years and have 2 kids has something to do with that :) ). Not looking forward to how she exits "new canon" (because she's not a permanent fixture in the old). I can't believe that "fans" sent Ms. Abbington death threats because they think she's breaking up Johnlock.

As far as the casefic, though, this episode was really lacking. What does everybody want to know? How Sherlock faked his own death. I'm not sure we really get an answer. Yeah, I think somebody read a lot of really bad fan fic and made it legit. And the climax of the other case? You've got to be kidding! Even the worst James Bond is not that camp.

Very nice scene at the beginning between Watson and Mrs. Hudson. Wish there had been more like this.

I liked how they handled Mary's entrance. The fact that Sherlock and she seemed to get along was a good choice, rather less obvious than the "jealousy" route that they could have gone. She did seem to have some chemistry with Watson (I wonder why) but also with Sherlock. I liked the tone they hit there.

The fandom stuff was over kill, might have crossed the line from gentle teasing of fans to ridicule.

I actually enjoyed the first episode. While other stuff was over done, namely the case itself. They seemed to give a nudge to people who ship Johnlock with the moment in the show where you could imagine Mary shipping them. Which was a very nice touch, and nod to the running joke of not a couple from the first two seasons.

Personally I am a Jonhlock fan, and I was glad that they portayed Mary in a way that enhanced the relationship as supposed to distracted from it. Lots of room for canon friendly jonhlock in episode one of season three. All without resorting to cheating to.

The case was annoying though.

I enjoyed the wedding episode (great dress on Mary) and the speech and it was very fun.

I just loved the wedding episode. Sherlock had so many wonderful moments with a lot of different people.

I love how he connected with Janine the bridesmaid, the little boy (which surprised me immensely), and the man with the crush on Mary. The toast while horrible in places, managed to bring a tear to my eye. I adore Mary and the bond the three now have.

My favorite line between Mary and Sherlock: "I'm not John, I can tell when you're fibbing!"

The case aside, this one was rich in great moments and dialog.

This review is the reason I have to finish that episode!

I have not been able to watch this series, but I did catch most of the wedding episode the other day and was utterly charmed, especially by Sherlock's speech at the reception. In a way, he reminded me a lot of Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory in that he didn't have a good grasp on certain human conventions and customs, and just tends to run roughshod over other people's sensibilities.

Tell me... does the series usually have the level of humorous content that the wedding episode did?
Old enough to know better, but that's never stopped me before.

Yes! The wedding episode was particularly good and some episodes have a little more drama (such as the season finale), but the show is always funny and charming. They have definitely talked about how in modern times, Sherlock would have been seen on the Autism spectrum so Sheldon-like is a good comparison. But the big thing in the wedding episode was showing just how much Sherlock loves/needs Watson, when always before that was a little oblique.

But if you like the relationship between Watson and Sherlock, you'll like the whole show.
