Best Movies of 2011

So - it's award season. What movies did you think were the best and/or worst this year?

I saw a few that I really liked:

Weekend - a mumblecore gay love story set in Nottingham. You're not human if you don't weep.

Tabloid - a documentary about an insane tabloid scandal. Awesome stuff.

Okay - I guess I didn't see that many good movies this year, but those two were awesome.

Anyway see anything good?

There are a lot of movies I wanted to see this year, but that I missed. I did see The Kings Speech (I saw it this year and it's listed as a 2011 film even though it was in the last Academy Awards). Super 8 was kind of nostalgic for anybody who liked Speilburg films. The Help was good too.

I thought Captain America was decent. I would have seen Cowboys And Aliens but it was pretty throughly panned and I decided to wait for the DVD and check it out cheaper. Same thing for Conan the Barbarian. I kinda expected that to be bad, but I want to see it anyway.

On the other hand, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes had a lot of good reviews, but I missed it in the theaters because of the timing. I'll see it here soon on DVD. Same thing for Contagion.

I'll admit it, I saw, and loved, both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Puss In Boots. The latter just cracked me up. Seriously. I heard good things about the Muppet movie, but I haven't seen it yet.

Other than that? I saw bits of Source Code (cameo from Scott Bakula in it) during SXSW. Haven't seen the Sherlock Holmes movie either, but probably will eventually. I'd really like to see Hugo and Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I've had some freinds recommend Bridesmaids but I'm avoiding Water For Elephants Unless I hear it's as good as the book.

We see most of our movies on DVD. Honestly, there aren't that many movies that both hubby and I want to see together.

I did see Captain America, and it was fun. Cowboys and Aliens was all right, but I kept seeing plot holes all through it; still, it had a few unexpected twists that made up for its deficiencies, IMO.

Rats! I wanted to see The King's Speech but didn't get to. I'll have to put that on my wish list of viewing.

Sadly the only movies I can recall seeing last year were either in my film appreciation class or things I Netflixed.

I saw The King's Speech. It was good - but it really was an episode of Masterpiece Theater with an A-list cast. The director even got his start doing Masterpiece Theater. I thought Inception was far more interesting and daring and just as well acted.

Slate.com has a survey of what the best movie of the year is - and I was happy to see Weekend being referred to as an audience favorite. There's been some discussion of it not getting seen because it's a "gay" film - which would be a shame. It's in fact one of the few gay romances I've seen that's neither tragic (Brokeback Mountain) or pedantic or self-congratulatory. It just exists in its own world. It reminds me a whole lot of Richard Linkletter's Before Sunrise and Before Sunset - two of my all time favorite films.

I haven't seen A Separation, but I that's pretty high on my list.

I also loved Cave of Forgotten Dreams, but I don't think Werner Herzog is the best documentary filmmaker as far as skills go. If he has a great subject, like Grizzly Man, his style works. If not, not so much. But Cave of Forgotten Dreams, about the Chavet Cave in France and the prehistoric cave paintings.
