I always thought that the builders were long dead - either killed by their own creation or just extinct and the station became intelligent and outlived its creators. Harvesting a random humanoid now and again was probably a very efficient way of boosting its processing speed and to an immortal artificial intelligence, probably seemed inconsequential to the station.

I like thinking this, too. Kinda like "The Doomsday Machine" of TOS -- we never really know, but a civilization's creation could've backfired on them.

Every time I've watched this episode (rewatched it again recently for my AU fic) I keep thinking that thing in sickbay that works on Malcolm's leg looks familiar.

I was right! It's a reused TNG prop! Memory Alpha says it was used in "Future Tense" too, but I haven't spotted it yet.

Probably because he's an Ensign. Taking someone of minor rank would tend to cause less fuss than if you grabbed 2nd, 3rd in command. Plus they are more likely to fall for the ploy of being ordered somewhere.
