General thoughts about the book we find out that Hoshi has a romantic relationship with a maco that was mentioned in her bio In a Mirror darkly and talks to T'Pol about the Romulan war was taking atoll on her and T'Pol was homesick for Vulcan she'd been away along time from home. The other crew members including T'Pol are affected by the vents of the war. I wisht here had been more of Travis in the novel. We saw T'Pau do alot of soul searching T'Pol returns to Vulcan to talk about how the Vulcans should help earth or the results will Vulcan will be next to fall to the Romulans. There's alot of great haracter moments in this book. I was happy how Trip&T'Pol's relationship is written in this book there is alot of lingering questions at the end of the book that should've been included in this book.

I finally picked up my copy of "To Brave the Storm" and flipped through a little of it. I really shouldn't be (and I am going to wait until I can settle in and enjoy it without feeling like I'm putting off everything else I need to do) but I couldn't help it.

I have to say, Michael Martins is a man after my own heart. You all know I like my TOS/TNG/DS9 references and homages in both the ENT fanfic I write and in the group-created Twitterfic I'm a part of. One of those references - included in said Twitterfic a long while back - was a character that seemed like such a natural. I would have expected this character to have shown up eventually in Enterprise, had it gone on for a few more seasons. In the brief little bit that I read, Martins did the same ... Tobin Dax makes an appearance! This was the second host for the Dax symbiont that would eventually become Jadzia on DS9.

I'm a happy Trek fan. :)

Okay, I know that I'm coming across like a broken record, but are there any friendship scenes at all in To Brave The Storm?

Yes there are friendship scenes with Archer&T'Pol talking about Trip that they both miss him and wondering id he's safe or mot..There's some nice scenes with the the Enterprise crew.I'd have to glance through the book to read some of the scenes.

I'm glad we have a full-on spoiler discussion thread because I just have to share this.

So, I finally get a chance to read more of the novel and - I can't help it - I flip to the end real quick to see if I get a happy ending. (Yup!) And then I spot a moment when the person who is obviously Trip Tucker introduces himself to the reporter he's talking to. He uses the name...

Micheal Kenmore.

Unless you're a Stargate Atlantis fan it might just slip by you. (That was Connor's character on SGA.) I cheered when I read it! :ugeek: I'm not done reading it yet but that's twice now that Martin made me happy with a name drop in this book.

I had been avoiding this thread because I hadn't read the book yet, but son gave it to me for Christmas and today I just finished it...

I had the exact same reaction! I had more than an inkling that it was Trip, but the name clinched it! So my question is...did the author have anything to do with SGA? I mean... it's kind of obvious where he got the idea for the name, but wouldn't that cause some kind of infringement problem?

Still, it tickled me no end!

Also, in addition to Tobin Dax making an appearance, the Starfleet officer in charge of Earth Outpost I is names Stiles. That ties in neatly with the TOS episode ("Balance of Terror"?) with Kirk's Enterprise playing a cat-and-mouse game with a Romaulan ship in the Neutral Zone, and one of Kirk's crewman is named Stiles, a descendant perhaps of the book's Stiles? I'm fuzzy on the details, but I believe Kirk's Stiles is enraged to find that Romulans look like Vulcans, and tries to take it out on Spock, because some of his ancestors were killed in a Romulan attack?
Old enough to know better, but that's never stopped me before.

I wondered that too. Possibly, but then again, maybe not. I assumed they just got permission from MGM if Simon & Schusters' lawyers said they needed it.

Yup! Lieutenant Stiles of Kirk's Enterprise apparently came from a long line of people who served in space. He lost several ancestors in the Romulan-Earth war: a captain, two commanders and an unspecified number of junior officers.

In the Lives of Dax story anthology there's there's a Tobin Dax story that takes place during the Roumulan war and Tobin and a Vulcan character mentioned in the latest Enterprise novel have to stop the Romulans from staealing their new prototype warp engine and killing the human crew members.Tobin saves the day in a unique way.
