Terra Nova

I've not seen this yet - again, no cable here. But I've read some very solid reviews and it's an interesting Sci Fi premise.

I agree, but I do not own a television set.

So do you know if Fox is planning to put the episodes up a day or two after they air in prime time? This was how I watched Battlestar Galactica -- I just avoided spoilers for 24-48h until the eps went up on SyFy's site.

Ifvoy, here's the Fox site for Terra Nova. http://www.fox.com/terranova/ It looks like you'll have to wait 8 days to watch an episode.

I've got it on my DVR. Looking forward to watching it this weekend. Hopefully FOX won't cancel this one too.

It's FOX, so they probably will cancel it if it's good. I think it sounds intriguing, but I don't know if I'll have time to watch it. If it gets good reviews I might wait until it's out on DVD so I can watch the whole thing pretty quickly. My little one is going through a major dinosaur phase, so every time the commercials for it come on, she goes wild. We've had to have the talk multiple times about how she's too young for it.

The premiere is up, although I'll admit I downloaded it from Amazon instead. It was...interesting, and I'm going to keep watching for now, but I can't say that I was completely sold.

It's visually stunning and I liked the music, and the plot was well-executed with good acting all around. But there was nothing substantially new or fresh about the ideas presented, and they spent WAY too much time on the teenagers. I'm glad there is an audience for teenage drama, but I'm not a part of said audience.

Anyone else seen it yet?

I'm trying to keep everything vague enough for those that have not seen it yet, but I may fail so be warned before reading further.

I enjoyed the dark vision of the future and think everything depicted is within reason for the future... especially the law broken in the very beginning.

I also get why they focused on the teens later in the show, to view the "new" world with young eyes, but it came across pretty flat for me. I think I would have enjoyed more their settlement visibly struggling to survive and a more realistic approach by having main characters more hands-on (even w/tools from the future). The plot with the son did not seem like something a struggling, fledgeling civilization would allow (hey new guy, you can go play while the settlement still needs to grow and hunt our food  ).

Honestly, I would rather see the leader's first days there. But in the end, I think the show has a lot of potential, if they can just find their footing... early!

Spoiler alert...

Now that I've seen it I can chime in. I thought it was an interesting premise and the law broken in the first moments sparked a discussion with out kids about how there are spots in present day Earth that have already enacted such a law. I agree that everything was visually stunning, music was nice, yada yada. I also agree that the teen son would probably not be allowed to wander off like that in his first days there as they were running a military organization and they just don't work like that.

I think that the show has potential but after watching the previews for next week I am slightly disillusioned. It seemed as if the writers are implying that the mom and dad are going to stray on each other... which irritated me. Come on, they had an illicit 3rd child, he takes the fall for it, and is gone only 2 years. IMHO that is hardly enough to break them up if they had already been married for at least 12-13 (judging from the looks of the oldest boy b4 the jail time). If they are doing that to spark a drama - whatever. Show me how they are going to actually make this society survive. I could care less about who is tempted by who. If I am wrong about the next episode and that wasn't what they were implying then 'yay' and maybe the show will interest me some more.

Also, did anyone catch that Brannon Braga was the ex. producer? I thought that was interesting.

AM, part of the reason I'm interested is because Braga is one of the executive producers. He's not a bad storyteller; he just shouldn't have ever been given such a free rein over Trek when he so clearly didn't understand the well-established fandom and mythos. Terra Nova isn't established yet, which makes this rather a non-issue in its case. Plus, Steven Spielberg is also not going to let him go too far off-track without threatening to yank his name.

As far as the marriage issue, I kind of saw something developing in the scene with the youngest daughter sleeping in the mother's bed. I can find the idea of them being in a rough patch realistic -- it has been two years -- but not the idea of the marriage actually in danger. Honestly, though, while I like character development I share your concern that it might be at the expense of plot. That's not okay; if time constraints mean the writers feel like they need to compromise then maybe they should take another look at the scope of the story.

I'm going to watch, though. There's still potential, at least right now.

Watching the pilot right now. Not impressed due to several issues but I don't necessarily want to go into them here. I'd really like to like the show. :(
