"Uh-huh."

Postby Aquarius » Wed Jan 19, 2011 7:41 pm

"Bound". T'Pol's response to Trip, when he says "We didn't mate":

"Uh-huh."

This seem so significant, yet in the time I've been a TnT fan I haven't seen anyone mention it. Am I the only one who thinks it's a big deal? (Aside from Mistress Euclid, that is. ;) ) That it's a pretty un-Vulcan thing to say, so obviously Trip's personality was asserting itself through the bond long before the sickbay joke cracking?

That this utterance alone can make a TnTer get that warm and melty 'shippy feeling?

Sorry, peeps--but to me, this is HUGE!

Thoughts?

It's a great moment. I agree that she's being quite "human" in her response, very probably because she's feeling his personality assert itself in his mind. But also he's clearly not quite getting what "mate" means to a Vulcan.

I always felt that when T'Pol reacts more what we can call "human" (undoubtly also because of Trips influence) the real T'Pol is showing. It's like you have this very funny, compassionate woman, but also totally Vulcan woman beneath the rules of her society and Trip helps her to be really her. (In another way, Trip inner life tends to be a bit Vulcan-like. Maybe it works also the other way around).

Back to "uh-huh". I really like that moment because Trip is protesting against what he thinks a negative meaning of "to mate" and she is like "I don't know what you thinking, buddy, but what we did, was mating. In every Vulcan sense." Guess the mating wasn't that bad.

Yes! I agree with you 100% about this!

I love that scene. I love T'Pol's face, I love T'Pol's answer, and I love that just for a moment, the whole thing is upside-down. For all the denying that was thrown to our faces in the Harbinger morning-after, now she's the one going to Trip and bringing it up. And also, by her reaction, you can tell it did mean A LOT to her. I like that her explanation seems so clinical at first, and when Trip denies the "mating", 'cause in his mind, mating is a whole other deal, she goes all, "So, what would you call that, huh?"Great TnT moment...

You can tell for T'Pol it was a big deal in that scene when she UH-huh to Trip that their relationship means agreat deal to her.I love this scene .Also Trip having all the cards and getting her to admit she wants him to come back and that she doesn't want him to leave she really missed him alot.

Wow! Who knew we'd get a thread out of it when I brought it up? LOL

Yes, the shoe does seem to be on the other foot, doesn't it?

Trip clearly doesn't understand the gravity of the word "mate", I think. I imagine he wouldn't have been so dismissive if he knew what it meant to T'Pol. I get the impression that when he hears "mate", he has mental pictures of wildlife doing it in Discovery Channel-type documentaries or something--that when she says it, she's making what he'd refer to as "lovemaking" seem impersonal, maybe even a little dirty and sordid, especially after the way she'd blown him off the morning after in "Harbinger."
I have an AT&T avatar and you don't.

I am going to have to go back and rewatch this episode. I remember this part, but this time, I need to watch for the nuances of the scene and the acting.
Old enough to know better, but that's never stopped me before.
