You're definitely not the only one. I'm torn two ways about this ship. I still think he looks a little too old for her, and that combined with the difference in rank is problematic. However, there is definitely something hot about forbidden romance, and we see couples with big age differences all the time in entertainment and in real life, so I could very easily overcome that objection.

I saw the ship early on, but when nothing seemed to develop between Archer and Hoshi, I lost interest. Now I'm trying to plan out a pretty massive multi-chapter story, and I've been contemplating an Archer/Hoshi plot.

For a while I shipped Hoshi and Malcolm a little. Most of the stories I've liked that center on Hoshi involve her and Malcolm, so I think that influenced me. But when I re-watched the episodes recently, I actually didn't see as much chemistry between Hoshi and Malcolm as I do between Hoshi and Archer. That's funny, because the fanfic I'd been reading really had me convinced Hoshi and Reed were just meant to be!

I think that, coupled with the chemistry I saw between the two characters onscreen (I know everyone interpreted it differently), one of the things that I'm loving about Archer/Sato fics is the very alpha male-ness of Archer. It rings true, for me, to his character. He wants something, he gets it. He's driven.

Okay, I need to start looking for Archer/Sato stories. Now.

I've never been bothered by the age difference. As I've said elsewhere, Bacall and Bogart were 25 years apart in age, but they were the loves of each other's lives. True love knows no age barrier.

Plus, I have a thing for older men. In fact, I married one. :love

I can totally see Jon and Hoshi together. They had chemistry from in "Broken Bow" on, and they have some great scenes together. My favorite is the opening of "Babel One," when she's teaching him how to insult in Tellarite. They're so comfortable with each other. In "Zero Hour," when he looks deep into her eyes and tells her she can get the job done... wow. And "Observer Effect," when he sacrifices himself to try to save her life -- that brought me to tears.

When TPTB put Jon and Hoshi together in "IaMD," I was thrilled, because I had always wondered what it would be like to see them together. Sure, it was twisted in the MU, but it was great to watch. :D

You know, I saw the chemistry in "Broken Bow," but then later in season one and season two, when the writers suddenly seemed to be bringing us around to an Archer/T'Pol ship, I thought they'd either changed their minds about an Archer/Sato ship or that I was crazy to have imagined it in the first place. Then there were a few early episodes like "Sleeping Dogs" and "Silent Enemy" that had a few nice Reed/Sato scenes, so I thought that was the direction they were going. Yet, that idea, too, seemed to be dropped. I really, really wish they'd decided from the beginning the direction they were going to take with some of these relationships. I suppose the real problem I had was that in their enthusiasm for developing Archer, T'Pol, and Trip, they didn't give us a good, clear picture of Hoshi. I don't really know who she'd be good with, because I feel like I don't really know who she is.

My UPN affiliate really jerked our market around during season three, and I ended up missing all but a few episodes when they originally aired, and then I just gave up and didn't even bother trying to watch season four. It wasn't until CBS started putting the episodes online for free that I was able to go back and watch the whole series from start to finish. There really were some great Archer/Sato scenes in there. The one from "Babel One" is one of my favorites. Unfortunately I'd already read spoilers about Hoshi's instructions for Tellarite insults. It must have been hilarious to watch that episode with no warning about what was going on there.

The "he's too old for her" argument has been brought into the Archer/T'Pol 'ship, too, even though chronologically T'Pol is old enough to be his mother; this evaluation has been based solely on his appearances.

Personally, I never thought he looked that much "older" than anyone on the show, but maybe that's a perceptional bias because of my own age; I was already a 30-something when the show aired. Still, he's handsome, heroic, understands the value of beer ( :cheers ), and is in a position of authority--so I ask myself, how many women wouldn't want that, no matter how old they are? And he's not so much older that it would be gross or anything, IMHO. It's not like the Anna Nicole Smith thing where she found a dude with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel or something.

And as stated, a lot of younger women like older men; they find a certain attractiveness about a guy who's had enough experience to figure himself out.

So as far as Hoshi and Archer go, I can see it despite the age thing. The difference in ranks may be a little more problematic--not because of any boy/girl scout mentality in terms of maintaining the rules, but the distance between their positions making each seem unattainable to the other.

First off: Thanks to Hummingbird2 for posting about my story Broken Rules. I appreciate that! I thought it was a nice bit of fluffy fluff. But now I have to weigh in on the Archer/Sato love interest. I have to agree with Aquarius:

I think she hit it spot on in all points. While Archer may be chronologically older then Hoshi is, I think that her life experience before Enterprise brings her a little farther up the age scale. I think that while T'Pol is older then he is, she is young for a Vulcan and therefore, closer to Archer in age, perhaps, then Hoshi. BUT I think that her very nature makes her older then Archer and not someone he can relax with and be himself. But back to Archer/Sato: The difference in their ranks make them even more fun to write for in trying to circumvent Starfleet's lack of wisdom in fraternization rules and I don't think that they look at each other that way as they have backstory before Starfleet.

So, currently I'm writing a story with a R/S plotline, and just for good measure, I'm working on an Archer/Sato story as well. IDIC, you know. :cheering

Seriously, we need to make a Archer/Sato forum.
