Report Spammers!

Postby Honeybee » Sat Feb 12, 2011 1:19 pm

The last two "new members" of this board were spammers, and they have been banned and their accounts deactivated.

Spamming is against our rules. If you see a spammer, report them.

We're going to be pretty aggressive with this. If we happen to ban someone who isn't a spammer because they had a suspicious website linked or some such, they can contact us and get a lecture about not linking to shady websites.

And I see there may be another:

imeandmyselfgp

It is not an easy job keeping up with spammers. TU was recently hit by a robot spammer, that originated from Russia, that left porn sites. It was rife, and it seemed everytime you looked a new one appeared. This went on for over a week. The mods did a great job trying to keep up with it, but they finally won out and the manager of the site was able to find a fix that stopped them altogether (though they left some major issues behind which are being resolved).

You definately have my support in ridding spammers from here, Honeybee!

We got hit with more than one today, most with links to pornographic sites.

Everyone, if there is a new member with suspicious links in their profile, let us know. I advise you NOT to click.

We're going to roll up our sleeves and research tools to stop these idiots, but for now we're banning in every way we can!

Sorry everyone!

One of the things I just did was change our captcha image for registration to something harder to recognize (a 3D image).

If you hear of anyone having an issue with it who is not a spammer, let us know!

I'm going to be looking into other spam countermeasures after midterms, too. This will mean backburnering the chat room some more, but banning five people a day is getting annoying.
