Sleepy Hollow

I watched this time travel/detective/end-of-the-world show loosely based on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It's great escapism and has some genuinely creepy imagery. I also thought the two leads were very charismatic.

I saw it! I rather liked it. I had read a preview describing it as "batsh** crazy," and it kind of was, but that was part of what made it so fun. I also think I'm going to have a major crush on Tom Mison, who plays Icabod Crane.

Did you notice that one of the deputies was played by John Cho, who is Sulu in the latest Star Trek movies?

Yes! John Cho was in it! As was Clancy Brown, who has been in everything including voicing the crab on Spongebob.

Tom Minson is really attractive, too!

And yes, the show is utterly insane. Masonic conspiracies, time travel, the book of revelation, headless horseman, George Washington! It's got everything but the kitchen sink!

That's why that character was so familiar! I didn't put the name with his face.

One thing I do appreciate about the premiere, and that I hope they continue through the series, is that it didn't bog down. Everything went along pretty much at a rapid clip, so much so that if you blinked, you could have missed something. The best sight gag: When the police are investigating the fatal attack on the priest outside the church, and as the camera pans, you see that the top of a street sign has been lopped off, supposedly in the attack. The sign? It was for a horseback riding crossing, and the head of the horseman was in the part of the sign that had been lopped off.

That was a phenomenal gag!

I also appreciated the conceit that Ichabod accepted the weirdness of his situation very quickly. Yes, we saw him learning what Starbucks was and playing with a car's automatic window, but the show established that he accepts he's in the future and is going to go with the flow. So, if the show wants to show him particularly confused or taken aback by something they can do that, but they aren't bogged down with him being terrified or mesmerized by everything.

Another critic I read praised the fact that the story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" doesn't seem to exist in this universe. So, nobody recognizes the name Ichabod Crane or knows what a headless horseman is. Also, my colleague noticed that Abby's boss is named Irving.

Well, it looks like this show is going to get a chance to develop its kooky and spooky mythology. Ratings were very good!
