Best Non Trek Sci Fi Romances

Postby Honeybee » Sun Apr 29, 2012 7:55 am

There was a post on Io9 about the worst and most unconvincing Sci Fri Romances, and I was thinking about what I would put on a best list, excluding Enterprise. It's actually really tricky if you don't count fan created media.

I'm going with Joss Whedon land:

Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike, Willow/Tara, Zoe/Wash

and

Sookie/Bill from True Blood
Jack/Ianto from Torchwood
The Tenth Doctor/Rose

Anyone else?

-Zoe/Wash and Kaylee/Simon from Firefly

- Sookie/Eric from the books True Blood is based upon, but Sookie/Bill from what little I've seen of the show

Mal/Inara from Firefly. That's how you handle a will-they-or-won't-they type of setup.

Adama/Roslin from BSG'03 were a perfect pair. And while I have a hard time accepting the way that Karl/Sharon Agathon from that show were put together, the subsequent portrayal of them fighting for their marriage (and their family) is well done. I was glad that they had a happy ending; they deserved it.

I'm a sucker for Devon/Danziger from Earth 2, for anyone who knows that show. Another example of a well done will-they-or-won't-they, although the writers were starting to get off target toward the end.

Han/Leia from Star Wars are a guilty pleasure of mine. I can't speak for it being particularly well done (or not well done) but the sparks, they do fly... :)

The only manhandling I saw really was the bridge scene in the Ewok village. I thought Han's jealousy and Leia's secrecy were forced, but I don't know how much of that was because of writing/direction vs. Harrison Ford not wanting to be Han Solo any more and Carrie Fisher being strung out.

Other than that, Han and Leia had awesome chemistry, and I spent years writing fanfic about them before dipping my toe in the TnT waters. When Han kissed Leia for the first time in ESB, you could feel every girl under 13 in the room start puberty. Three years later, the same thing happened to the boys when they saw the metal bikini.

It's rare that romance is central to a SciFi film, but it absolute is to the first Terminator film. I loved the Kyle/Sarah romance in that film. Great, great stuff. And I liked the central romance in Avatar, too.

WALL-e and EVA are my hands-down non-Trek favorite. :)

To be honest, I'm drawing a blank on most non Trek TV sci-fi romances. A few of the good ones have been listed already so I'll just add: Spike and Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was a joy to watch those two together. Also, John Crichton and Aeryn Sun of Farscape and Clark Kent & Lois Lane from Lois and Clark. There were also several really strong couples in the anime series "Robotech". Most of my recent favorites are from film: Neo and Trinity. Penny Potts and Tony Stark. Jake Sully and Neytiri.

I was going to mention Aeryn and Crichton. I've loved this pairing ever since I first watched Farscape, but sometimes the tension was unbearable.

My favorites are Ten/Rose from Doctor Who, Jack/Ianto from Torchwood, and Sookie/Sam from the books (they don't even get airtime on the TV show. Boo.)

But my all-time favorite:

Jayne/Vera from Firefly. ;)
Malcolm: The radio! Or is it just the galaxy, giggling at us again?
Trip: It can giggle all it wants. But the galaxy's not gettin' any of our burbon!

Han/Leia - hands down for me.

And from the modern Battlestar Galactica - Adama sr./Roslin and Helo Agathon/Sharon
Captain Archer: Do you know how to tell him to shut up?
Ensign Hoshi Sato: SHUT UP!

Mal/Inara

Even though I am not a T'pol/Tucker shipper at all, i could not help feel that there were similarities between that pairing and Mal/Inara. I would love love love to read a crossover fic slashing Reed and Simon, and pairing up Trip and Inara, maybe even Archer/Inara.
But I am ranting now.

I used to be quite a fangirl for Tremors the series, and was big on the implied attraction for Tyler/Rosalita. but the show lived a mighty 13 episodes before it's cancellation so it was never explored.
