Firefly and Serenity

I just noticed we didn't have a thread for the much beloved, canceled way too soon Firefly. Netflix has all 13 episodes and the film if you haven't seen it.

Fox just made a huge blunder when they refused to air the pilot, which elegantly explained and set up the premise and the characters in favor of a more "action oriented episode". I just rewatched the pilot and it's a thing of beauty.

My other favorite episodes are Ariel, which is when they knock off an Alliance hospital so Simon can MRI River (complete with homage to The Fugitive) and I love War Stories where Mal and Wash are held prisoner and tortured and the rest of the team sets upon rescue.

I love Firefly. It was a brilliant concept that some just didn't get. Most people don't realize that there were no aliens in that universe, only Humans spread across the outer planets.

I love them all but one of my favorites is Out Of Gas. Not only does it begin at the end and give us flashbacks to explain, but we get flashbacks of multiple time frames. We get to see how Mal collected his motley crew.

I can't say enough good things about this wonderful series that was gone too soon, (and the movie, :makeout for Kaylee!)

I adore Firefly! There are so many great quotes from that show. I've found, "My food is problematic," and "I can kill you with my brain," to be particularly helpful on several occasions.

How did we overlook that one? Firefly is wonderful! Unfortunately, I wasn't particularly happy with some of the OOC behavior that went on in the movie, but that hasn't kept me from writing fic for the show. Any other ficwriters for Firefly here?

I've been knocking around the idea of a Firefly fic, but I haven't started it yet. If anyone wants to link to good Firefly stories, feel free.

I think the richness of the world is what is so compelling, particularly the amalgamation of cultures. I love that Chinese and English sort of mashed up.

I know that the original show has sailed (Joss has said so) but I hold out hope for a TNG-style revival.

Jaynestown is also a great episode. It really nails Joss Whedon's ability to be both funny and serious in one episode.

I love Dyce's Horseshoe Nail series -- and this is coming from someone whose usual reaction to River/Jayne is "oh, come on, you've got to be kidding me!" It's a long read, and AU, but well worth the time. Start with "Two Gorram Days."

Blood and Chocolate by mosylu and Becoming Nara by Lattelady are also particularly good. So is just about anything by LJC.

This is one fandom where I've found a good bit of quality fic on FF.net. There is the usual amount of drek, of course, but generally I've been able to tell whether something is worth it within the first couple of sentences.

And of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my own humble attempts in the area. Right? :whistling

Hubs biggest complaint is that they never really gave a solid clue about Shepherd's past, but we have our theory that he was an operative like Chiwetel Ejiofor's character in "Serenity".

"The hero of Canton, the one they call... meeee."

"Have you ever been with a warrior woman?"

I remember laughing so hard I started tearing up when Wash said this, but couldn't remember everything he said. Found the quote:
"The legs. Oh yeah, definitely have to say it was her legs. You can put that down. Her legs, and where her legs meet her back. Actually, that whole area. That, and above it." :laugh

And one of my other favorites is "Our Mrs. Reynolds". "Good book."

Firefly ranks right up there with Enterprise as one of my absolute favorite shows, it appeals to me on so many, many levels. To be honest, I'm surprised I haven't written any fanfic for it yet. :) Now there's a thought.

It's cool that this thread just started, because I got to see Adam Baldwin (Jayne) in person just a couple of weeks ago! He was in Austin for a comic-con. :D

I just realized recently that Christina Hendricks of Mad Men fame plays the villainous Saffron. I knew I recognized her from somewhere!

I loved FF when it originally aired but just haven't been inspired to do Firefly fanfiction for it.

That said, there's a pretty decent (IMO) fic at the Pit of Voles under the Enterprise section called "Seleya" that is sort of a FF/ENT mashup. T'Pol as Malcolm Reynolds ... heh.

Also? I found this image today and just love it...
