FORUM RULES

Postby Aquarius » Sat Sep 11, 2010 5:27 pm

We'll try to keep this short and simple, since attention spans vary. If you are unclear about the purpose of any rule, it may be covered in our FAQs section, or contact an Admin for clarification. Please take a moment to read the FAQs and the Rules thoroughly. Doing so may save us all an embarrassing predicament later! 8)

If these look vaguely familiar, it's because I authored them elsewhere.

1. NO FLAMING OTHER MEMBERS

You are free to argue a point, challenge a point of view, call another member's statement into question, but personal attacks are off-limits. Challenge statements and behaviors, NOT people.

2. NO TROLLING

Inflammatory remarks for the sake of getting a reaction is not allowed. Under this umbrella is also thread domination (replying to just about every other post made; appearing to try to get the last word on everything) and repeatedly making the same arguments ad nauseum. So is shaming other members for what they read/write/like.

3. NO SHOW BASHING

This is a fan site. Wholesale hate of Enterprise, Star Trek, or real people associated with it is not tolerated. This includes the novels.

4. NO FLAMING OF REAL PEOPLE ASSOCIATED WITH STAR TREK

While it may be a little lofty to think our humble forum may be visited by anyone real associated with Star Trek, some of them are net-savvy and human nature may compel them to find out what other people are saying about them. Actors are sometimes a media target because of things in their personal lives, and writers/producers take heat for things they do with the characters we love. Celebrities are people with feelings, too. If you don't want it said about you, your best friend, or your grandma, don't say it here.

5. NO HOT-BUTTON ISSUES, UNLESS THEY ARE DISCUSSED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF STAR TREK

This includes but is not limited to politics, religion, and morality issues. Also, some issues about Star Trek itself can become "hot-button" and are therefore forbidden. If you've got a "Trip was raped" or "T'Pol shouldn't have been XO" agenda, we don't wanna hear it.

6. LEAVE YOUR GRUDGES/DRAMA/FEUDS AT THE DOOR

This is pretty self-explanatory. If it happened at another site/a con/real life, leave it there. Everyone gets a clean slate here.

7. SIGNATURE LINES

Feel free to put banners or links to your fics or your favorite quotes. Just please limit it to one banner and a maximum of three links or quotes in any combination. Self-promotion is great, but don't turn it into a resume! Additionally, signature lines deemed to violate site rules against overt politicizing or trolling (such as racist, sexist or otherwise inflammatory statements) can result in a site ban.

8. PHOTOS AND ARTWORK

No hot-linking of photos or artwork; picture links should come from your own website or photo sharing account (ie, Photobucket). Any photo or artwork containing adult material should be linked ONLY, not displayed, with a warning that it's not work/kid safe. Photos or art embedded into a post should not contain full frontal nudity.

9. NO SPAMMING OR PROMOTION OF SPAMMING SERVICES.

Duh. Spammers aren't welcome. If you see one, let us know. We'll ban, bot or real person.

10. IN LINE WITH RULES 1-5, PLEASE DO NOT USE CHARGED LANGUAGE.

We thought that this would be obvious, but words that include (but are not limited to) stupid, moronic, idiotic, makes me sick, etc. can make people feel like you're starting something, whether you directed it at them or not. It's fine if you're talking about your boss who messes everything up or your neighbor who blasts music at 4 am or a child molester, but don't use it in reference to what we all came here to celebrate--our fandom and each other. Just be cool.

CONSEQUENCES

The consequences for violating these rules can be warnings, post editing by Admins, post deletion, thread locking, thread deletion, moderated posting, suspension, and ultimately banning, depending on the severity and frequency of the offense. Each instance will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. The Admins' word is final. Please just save us all the trouble by not being a pain in the butt in the first place!

Does this mean I don't have the right to free speech?

Well...kind of. The Delphic Expanse is a privately owned and run forum and site. Rule of thumb: it isn't always what you say, but how you say it. We encourage polite honesty. However, your rights end where someone else's begin, and we will always err on the side of other people's enjoyment and comfort.

Just wanted to point out that Honeybee added a No Spamming rule to the list. Not that we have to worry abut anybody already here, but we had someone sign up who's occupation was selling insurance, their only interest was business networking, and their website was selling a service that spams boards like this one.

Hmmmmm, I wonder why he signed up here???

So, if we see hinky stuff like that where Star Trek isn't mentioned anywhere on a profile, and if we see any actual spam, we're gonna be giving them the boot. Ban first, ask questions later.

And by all means, if you see it, please report it!

Thank you.
