Paper or PADDS for reading?

Postby Putaro » Tue May 17, 2011 9:36 am

I just got a new novel from Amazon and I was sitting down to read it and realized how much I had missed reading things on paper. I was reading a lot on my Kindle (fan fic looks and reads a lot better on the Kindle, btw) and then I got an Android tablet a few weeks ago and I 've been reading a lot on that, though somehing about it gives me more eyestrain than the Kindle.

What does everyone else think? I think I'm going to be buying paper books for a while.

I tried reading fanfic on my Nook. That touchpad is a pain in the proverbial posterior.

I prefer paper books. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, and my eyesight isn't what it used to be, but printed words on paper seem much easier to see than on a screen.

Also, I'm kind of old-fashioned, I guess. There's just something about the smell of a book, especially a new one, that strikes a chord with me, and the feel of actually turning the pages.
Old enough to know better, but that's never stopped me before.

This, though I'm more enamoured by the smell of old books than new ones. The act of reading a book itself is very relaxing and cathartic, and personally, the smell and the tactility of the pages are integral to that experience, turning it over in your hands to read the blurb, taking of a dust jacket if it has one, adjusting to the weight and feel of it. I get the same sense of satisfaction from browsing in book shops, or even in my own personal library (well, one shelf) and deciding what to read as I reminisce over what I have read.

Having said that, I would love a Kindle so I could read more easily on-the-go, but I'd definitely have eye strain problems.

I prefer reading paper books it's easier on my eyes and I find it relaxing and more enjoyable than trying to read a computer screen for a longtime it causes me to have eyestrain and headaches. I read fanfiction on my computer after awhile the small print causes eyestrain. If I want to read fanfiction stories I like to print the stories out it's alot less stressful for my eyes if I can read it on paper printed out an entire story.

I almost always read fanfic on my Kindle now, unless it's really short. I start it, and if I think I want to keep reading, I download it and convert it to read later. Much easier on the eyes than staring at a screen, and I find I can concentrate on it better.

I won't be giving up paper for books, though. I really can't get into reading real books on my Kindle, though I'm not quite sure what my brain thinks the difference is. And I like having something I can hold and put on a shelf and look at and lend to people.

I read fanfic on my laptop. A Kindle would be nice, but it's not in the budget at the moment.

However, when it comes to everything else, I'm old school. I'd take a real book any day over an ebook.

For me, it's always going to be whatever is convenient at the moment. I love books, I read fanfic on my laptop, but if I'm stuck somewhere, I'll read on my Droid. It doesn't matter. I engage more with paper, I think, but I don't dismiss electronic options, especially when smaller/convenient is called for, or it's just what's at my disposal when I have some time to kill.

Oh, I was an avid reader of books, would stay up all night reading them, but now I prefer to read off my laptop. For one, my arms don't get tired from holding up a book to my face, and the other would be that I can see the words clearer off the screen than I can in a book. Yep, me is getting old!!!

I am a really big Kindle fan girl if there is such a thing. My husband got me one for Christmas and it is fantastic. I really don't feel like I am reading from a screen as it didn't light up, it's very realistic to reading from a paper back. I missed the feel but I think it's cool, I even call it a padd lol! The Kindle is designed to be as close to a book that you can get without it being a book if that made sense. It probably explains why you don't get eye strain if you don't get it with actual books.

if anyone has the opportunity get a Kindle!
