Buttoning Down the Details -- Your Opinions, Please!

Alright friends... There are just a couple of details that need to be worked out before we get this party started.

First, how long for each assignment would be reasonable for your schedules? One week or do you think we need two?

--Personally I think one week is the best, so that our skills continue to get sharp (and the assignments aren't too time consuming, honestly).

Second.. Do we want to have a thread for each assignment or do we want to each have our own personal threads where we post our work? Or perhaps both?

--I am leaning toward both, since we may get new members over time who might be interested in joining the group. This way they can catch up on the assignments in their own time, as well as post their work in their own threads.

Also, I think this is an opportunity for us to post WIPs as well -- work that we might want to clean up a bit before sharing it with the rest of the forum. We have the opportunity to give each other reviews (polite!) to help each other grow in our work.

Finally, let's establish some guidelines for the forum as well. What are some rules that we want to have to make this a safe environment for the development of our skills? (Doesn't have to be extensive.)

Basically, I'm asking just how detailed critiques should be. The Expanse is mostly a straight support site, but they have a place for "No Crying" as well. Do we want the art forum to be a "No cry" zone or do we want to be a little softer in our critiques (or not really crit at all -- just keep to the positive)?

I'd like to get this show on the road on Monday, if at all possible. That doesn't mean that you have to have the first assignment done by then... but I will start the first assignment thread with a summary.

Time... I vote for a week, average. If you think it's something that could take a few minutes, perhaps 3 days. If it's something that could actually take days... mark it for longer (2 wks or something). I guess what I'm saying is it depends on how long you think the lesson would take then translate that into days.

Threads, I vote for one thread per lesson. If we have a thread per lesson and per person, that could get a little cluttered. If we have one thread per lesson, all of the info and artwork would be in one place.

Guidelines... I like the ones for the Writing Workshop. They've been perfect in the way of handling critiques so far and I think it wouldn't take much work to transferring over to drawing.

My 2 cents for what it's worth.

A week sounds good to me.Especially when so many people have busy schedules. it's hard to squeeze in enough time to draw and practice.A week gives us more of a chance to practice and improve our skills. 8) I have one problem I can't post my drawings :( The last time I had computer problems the person who fixed my computer deleted the software for my scanner.Without even telling he did it for some unknown reason. :x So now I can't use my scanner. :headagainstwall

A week will be fine with me. As far as how many threads? You guys decide, I'm a great follower :D.

About the critiques, I do not have it in me to be harsh about others work (nurturer here). However I guess I could take it if someone were to be a little rough on me. The thing is, there are so many different styles among us that it's kind of comparing apples and oranges as they say. I haven't been involved with the writing workshop yet so I don't know how critical they get.

All I know is that I'm looking forward to some good lessons and learning more about the craft. This is exciting!

Thanks for the input, guys! (Or gals! LOL)

Reanok -- do you have a digital camera (or even a cell phone camera)? That might be a way to post your work. I only recently got a scanner. I had been using my digital camera before then and just tweaking the brightness contrast in photoshop.

Sorry. The rules for writer's workshop critique are:

1) Express themselves politely.
2) Make suggestions, not demands.
3) Be constructive and honest.
4) Should make themselves available and post their response during the time set by the narrator.
5) Can interact with one another and respond to one another in the response posts, but must keep focus on the fic

Not exactly the same for this but the basic ideas behind them I think are perfect for this.

I think these rules pretty much sum it up. :D And a week is fine with me.

And I use a digital camera to take my pics and clean them up using Picnik, a free on-line photoshop-type program.

Misplaced All i have is my printer/ scanner I don't have a digital camera.I still plan on doing drawings though. I did some wildlife drawings they turned out better than I thought they would.
