HOW TO USE THIS SECTION

WRITERS:

This is for finding out what you need to hear, vs. what you want to hear. Maybe you've posted a fic that isn't getting favorable responses, or not much in the way of responses at all...and you want some solid, constructive feedback on what may improve the situation. Or, maybe you haven't even posted it yet, and you want to know if your beta reader did right by you before you post it for public consumption.

Some ground rules:

1. It's called "No Crying!" for a reason. If you're going to be shocked, offended, or angry if someone finds something wrong with your masterpiece, then you're here for the wrong reason. Accept criticism with dignity and grace. Remember, you asked for it.

2. What happens in here, stays in here. No tantrums, buzzkill posts, or passive-aggressive behavior in other areas of the Expanse if the news was bad. Nobody wants to see that. Doing it will be treated like trolling. Though, if the news was good, I suppose "Whee! I don't suck!" in other areas of the forum is allowable. 8)

3. Don't take it personally. This is about your story, not you.

4. VERY IMPORTANT: Label your story with rating (G thru NC-17) and genre (Het or Slash). It's only fair to let the critic know what they're in for. Those kinds of surprises are just bad.

READERS:

This is your big chance to say what's really on your mind. If you liked the piece, it's okay to say so, but remember the author came for something more substantive than "Loved it! Write more!" Don't worry--we don't expect you to be deep and profound in your feedback! Just be politely honest. A reference list will be posted of things to look for that may help you to articulate what you liked/didn't like about what you read, so don't stress about it!

Some ground rules:

1. BE NICE. Yes, the author asked for brutal honesty, but you don't have to put the "brute" in "brutal." Be polite. We're here to help, not to hurt feelings or destroy egos.

2. What happens here, stays here. Okay, maybe it was the dumbest thing you ever read. We're not going to be happy if you use other areas of the forum to make an author feel bad about it. Doing so will be treated like trolling. So don't.

3. Be honest. The author is counting on you.

4. Confine your remarks to the story in question, not the authors themselves. This is not the time to get personal. Flaming's against the rules, any way.

Thank you.
