The Drabble Game

We did this at a Star Wars site I belonged to many moons ago. It's a lot of fun because it makes use of prompts to keep you writing, works as a good warm-up, but it's not like like you're gonna be here all day because it's short!

So what exactly is a drabble? For those who don't know, it's a short piece of writing that's precisely 100 words. No more, no less. To give you an idea, my short piece Burn is technically two words too long to be an actual drabble--but if you look at that, it'll give you an idea of just how short 100 words really is!

So here's how the game works:

I give a prompt. One of you--it doesn't matter who--writes an Enterprise drabble based on that prompt. The responder posts their drabble, then picks the word for the next prompt. Then someone else writes a drabble fro that prompt, picks the next prompt, and so on.

So I'll pick the first prompt, and somebody better drabble me!

I loved it, lousmom313! Thank goodness for study breaks. :D

And here I go:

“You eat that every mornin',” he observed from across the table.

“Plomeek broth contains all the nutrition I require until the midday meal.”

“Yeah,” he said between mouthfuls of biscuits and red-eye gravy, “but it's not very interesting.”

“'Interesting' at breakfast often results in unfortunate changes to one's physique,” she returned dryly.

“You could always try some oatmeal or somethin'. 'Sides,” he grinned, “variety's the spice of life.”

She gave him the ubiquitous eyebrow. “I was under the impression that usually applied to our recent sexual encounters.”

“Eat your soup, darlin'.”

Okay Aquarius. Here's my ketchup response. It takes place in the first season.

Title: Do you want fries with that?

“Disgusting,” said Malcolm, eying Trip’s plate of fries.

“I thought the Brits invented chips, as you call ‘em,” replied Trip.

“We perfected them,” said Malcolm, “with vinegar and batter fried cod. Ketchup ruins them.”

Trip dipped one of his fries into ketchup, eating it deliberately. Chef knew just how to make french fries, American style.

Malcolm retrieved a bottle vinegar from the salad bar, pouring the stuff over his fries. Trip made a face just as T’Pol appeared. She examined both men’s plates.

“The English eat their fries with small forks, don’t they? Very civilized.”

Malcolm smiled, smugly. “I agree.”

edited to add, drabble archived here.

Can I play? Here is my response to Emerald.

Trip nervously fiddled with the velvet box in his pocket, waiting for T’Pol to arrive.

The door opened, his mate entering.

Trip dropped to one knee and held out the box, “T’Pol, I know that you proposed to me, but this is a human custom we use to seal the deal. Will you wear my grandmother’s ring?”

“Vulcan’s also occasionally wear a ring to signify a betrothal but only a very rare gem called a blood stone. However, I will be honored to wear your foremother’s ring.”

Looking in the box at the emerald ring, T’Pol gasped, “A blood stone.”

I'm responding to BlueTiger's Scarf prompt:

It's AT&T, of course

_____

“So, you think you can tell us apart?” drawled Trip.

He had wrapped a silk scarf around her eyes. She inhaled. Both men were still in the room.

“I don’t need my eyesight. My sense of smell is keen; I know your individual footsteps.”

The two men had changed places in an attempt to obfuscate their location. Jonathan stepped closer. She gasped as she felt a jolt of heat at the small of her back.

“It’s about surprise,” whispered Jonathan as he moved the hot stone up her spine.

Ice ran across her lip. She shivered. “And sensation,” said Trip.
