Ann (aka A.C.) Crispin

I heard about this via a friend, but StarTrek.com also has an article: Ann Crispin Says Goodbye

Ann Crispin is saying goodbye, farewell and thank you. The acclaimed author of her own, original StarBridge series and novels set in the Star Wars, V, Alien and Pirates of the Caribbean universes, as well as, of course, such beloved and bestselling Star Trek tales as Yesterday’s Son, Sarek and Time for Yesterday, has revealed that she’s nearing the end of a protracted battle against cancer.

“I've been hesitant to make this post, but it's time,” Crispin – whose pen name is A.C. Crispin -- wrote today on her Facebook page. “I want to thank you all for your good wishes and prayers. I fear my condition is deteriorating. I am doing the best I can to be positive but I probably don't have an awful lot of time left. I want you all to know that I am receiving excellent care and am surrounded by family and friends."

Ann's TOS Trek books are some of my favorites, and the news just breaks my heart. Here's the tweet and the link to her extended post on Facebook.

I have all her Star Trek books, and re-read them from time to time. So sad to hear about her. I can't imagine how much courage it must have taken for her to post about her illness.

On a related note, this made me go look up info on one of my favorite authors, Barbara Mertz, who wrote under various pen names including Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels. I was saddened to learn that she had died just last month! She was 85, and hadn't published anything in the last few years, so I had wondered about her.
Old enough to know better, but that's never stopped me before.

She's been a personal hero of mine ever since she responded to a letter I sent her while I was in junior high school, and I was lucky to be able to meet her at Dragon*Con just prior to the cancer announcement (likely after she was actually diagnosed). She's never written anything I didn't like, including her original work, not all of which was finished. The world's going to be FAR less without her in it.

I left a message on the Facebook post and would encourage everyone else to do the same.

I was busy with school, so I missed this post.

I was saddened to hear of her passing. I had written her a fan letter when I was 14, and she actually answered it. Not a form letter; she actually addressed my questions and comments. Imagine what that meant to a teenaged aspiring writer. For the longest time, I revered her as the Coolest Person Ever.

Oh I am so sad to hear this! I have a few of her Star Trek novels, loved her work very much.
RIP Ann!
I shall have to dig them out and reread them!
What I wouldn't give to have an Episode of Enterprise where Trip somehow manages to loses his uniform and gets covered in Nutella.

Aeryn: And you say you want to go back to that place of pain and suffering!
John: Well you guys don't have chocolate!

Captain Archer: Do you know how to tell him to shut up?
Ensign Hoshi Sato: SHUT UP!
