And with regards to the criticism of it being sexed up (in the thing that Aquarius posted) - that's just nuts. I mean, really, it's like they weren't even watching other Trek incarnations. Not only did TOS give us mini-skirts and green skinned slave girls and shirtless Kirk and Pon Farr, but remember the planet they visited on TNG where Wesley steps on flowers and everyone is running around in these teeny bikinis? Was not DS9 chocked full of holo-porn jokes and ear gratification jokes? Not only did Voyager give us 7of9 (who transcended her eye candyness to be a great character) but copious Klingon rough sex jokes around the Paris/Torres ship?

But you know what? I think part of the problem was that much of the "eye" of Enterprise was on the men. Io9 did an article on the rare cases in SciFi when men's bodies are celebrated - and they used Enterprise as a positive example.

Anyway, that's a perfect example of people wanting to find something to hate - and totally deluded themselves about the instances of the same stuff going on elsewhere in the franchise.

^ Too true. And I have to say, I always thought Jolene and Jeri both unfairly took way too much criticism for being pretty. I mean...really???

You're right. I think that a lot of the problem was that we saw so much of the men in their Starfleet blues, not T'Pol in her catsuit. Not that *I* consider either to be a "problem" -- just saying, in the context of people complaining about it being "sexed up."

Again, back to the Male Gaze. People are so attuned to being marketed to from that POV -- the one that appeals to the heterosexual male -- that anything different from that, whether it involves sex or not, is seen as radical. And if that "Male Gaze" is turned onto a male body as an object, rather than something that another heterosexual male can identify with ("yup, that's me, I'm that dude"), it becomes very uncomfortable for... heterosexual males. Who then see it as all sexed up.

ETA: To illustrate what I'm talking about... have an ad from a 1967 Life Magazine. Now, tell me what that's all about, hm?

I think some people were turned off by seeing the men in their undies or shirtless so often, but it seemed like most of the criticism about it being too sexed up was directed at T'Pol's character. Why some people object to beautiful women in sci-fi is beyond me! A lot of the rage was centered around the catsuit. I thought T'Pol's first catsuit was ugly, but I liked the ones she wore in the last two seasons quite a bit. I can see how it might have been logical for her to wear an actual Starfleet uniform in the fourth season, but I couldn't understand all the hate about her uniform being too tight. Yeah, obviously the "real" reason was so that her curves could be seen, but honestly a tight-fitting uniform was logical to me. There wasn't a lot of extraneous material to get caught in stuff in a crisis situation, and I assume it kept her warm.

Would it be tacky of me to point out that Chakotay was bare-ass naked in the Voyager episode 'Tattoo'? ;)
