I'm a long-time Trek fan, but Enterprise is the only series that has ever compelled me to write. Most of what I write is Archer/Reed, frequently within the context of an established relationship. I enjoy the constraints of the 100-word drabble format, and like using a drabble series to explore aspects of a scenario or a relationship.

I am mareel at AO3 and Warp 5 also.

I know I've told you (probably many times) how much I love this story, but I'm saying it again here. This is the best treatment I've read anywhere of the post-Affliction/Divergence situation between Jon and Malcolm. There are few fics that have them finding their way to each other AFTER that, and this works beautifully. The descriptions and images are lovely, the tension between them is palpable, and when they get together it feels inevitable (and erotic as hell).

Summary:

Love is indeed the tie that binds. In more ways than one. Light spoilers for Season 3 in general.

You know, it's been a long time since I read this, and I'd forgotten how much it affects me. This is so completely Malcolm doing all he can, offering all he can offer, to bring Jon a semblance of normality in one part of his life. I always love how Malcolm is so completely his protector even when there are times when they disagree.

Beautiful images and words.

What a wonderful celebration! I love the way everyone just started contributing to the decoration of Jonathan's door with their cards and gifts (not forgetting Porthos!). I think that would mean a lot to him.

Author's Response:

Mareel:

Thanks for the review. When the idea came to me, it just seemed so natural. We know that the Enterprise crew would follow Archer anywhere so I could see them trying to let him know that and I do think he'd appreciate it for certain.

Thanks for the review. There really isn't much to read canon wise. However, in my own mind, there a great deal of stories that could be written and I hope my muse takes me there again.

I loved reading this; it's so beautiful. I love watching Malcolm allowing Jon a glimpse into his inner self, and it makes so much sense to me that Malcolm would be a musician. It's captures so well the way he was so transformed in making the music.

And his choice of instrument (though not his first) suits him well. Malcolm is so sensual, and an instrument that allows body contact, that lets him literally feel the music would contribute to the feeling of freedom and release he finds when he plays, especially since he has so few other outlets.

And I really like the give and take between the two of them at this early stage of what Jon clearly hopes will become more than friendship. Getting Malcolm to call him Jon is a huge step; I hope their breakfast goes well for them both.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

I've told you how much I loved this, especially since I don't usually go for much in the way of kink. But this is about trust and love and that's apparent from the first line to the last.

I really liked learning Malcolm's thoughts on the differences between their fundamental needs - Malcolm's need to be touched and Jon's need to hear and watch Malcolm's pleasure as part of his own arousal and satisfaction.

Thanks so much for this.

I love this. The first part is so painful to read - Malcolm has had a long time to think about things and his words hit Jonathan just where he is most vulnerable.

I really like the subtle progression over the course of the story in the way Jonathan is thinking about/referring to Malcolm as they find their way back - from 'my former officer' to 'my old friend' to his lover and his partner. I see this as mirroring the ways in which we see Malcolm slowly trusting Jon with more of himself, both physically and emotionally.

This is a great look at what I always suspected was a developing friendship between Forrest and Soval. The chess game is both a natural way for them to connect, and a wonderful metaphor for much else about their relationship.

It's a pity they killed off Forrest in 'The Forge". I think Forrest would have been an essential character in the series, esp. with the Vulcan/Human angle.

I figured chess would be a natural game for Vulcans, considering their mindset.

This is a wonderful glimpse into a very believeable triggering point for Malcolm’s aquaphobia – and into his (and his parents') reactions to it.

It’s interesting (and telling, I think, about his relationship with his father) that he seems much more open, and even demonstrative, with his Uncle Archie than he is with his father. That seems very much Malcolm to me, in that we do see him in canon as opening up on several occasions to people he trusts.

That he seems to be able to confide in his mother and trusts her to keep his secret is also a lovely glimpse into his psyche and again, is very consistent with the Malcolm we see serving on Enterprise. I get the idea that this might not be the first secret kept between Malcolm and his mum – which makes a lot of sense to me, maybe it's a result of both Stuart’s rigid attitudes and his probable absence on duty for significant portions of Malcolm’s childhood.

He obviously cares about his father’s opinion of him, but not to the extent that it prevents him from choosing his own path – both at the fishing boat and in his career choice. They are both stubborn men.

I loved Malcolm’s comparison of his father to the riptide. Very astute. There is a lot of depth to Malcolm, even as a child, and I do think he has thought a lot about this.

Thanks so much for sharing this!

Author's Response:

And thank you for the beta. You were spot on in all suggestions.

I liked pulling Malcolm's family out to play with. We saw a few glimpses and mostly heard stories in the show. It was nice to work with them.

This feels very true to both shows and their characters and values. Hawkeye and Phlox make for a really interesting encounter.

I definitely think Hawkeye's willingness to go along with this strange doctor was very like him - once he knew there was a patient to treat, you could really feel his impatience to get on with it!

And I think the solution they came up with was a good one. I'm sure Hawkeye was right that people would think he'd been hallucinating or something if he tried to talk about his experience.

This is wonderful! The form serves the content well. Jon’s thoughts feel like impressions – albeit deep impressions – from the interview with Malcolm as he tries to sort out what just happened.

I especially like the parallel sets of observations for – ‘who you are’ and ‘who I am’. It’s such an accurate picture of Malcolm, shields again in place after what must have been a shared moment of what-ifs. And the whole impact on Jon is captured as ‘who I am remains, undone.’

I've told you how much I like this, and that I can't wait for the next parts.

One of the things that really works well is how the opening scene establishes that, for Malcolm, what happens on the planet is definitely not something without foundation in his own feelings about the man he's still thinking of as 'his Captain'. And then the progression in how he refers to Jon, both in addressing him and in his private thoughts, becomes steadily more personal.

That progression is mirrored in their gradually increasing ease with the intimacy of their situation - from apologies and embarrassment to 'it's okay in the dark' to the admission that the relationship wasn't at all unwelcome and that they would miss that intimacy when it ends.

Date: January 23, 2013 Title: Chapter 2: The Idle City

This is such beautifully drawn world! The Feyr are an unusual and fascinating people who make me want to know more and more about them and their culture. Their food sounds delicious!

I love the scene between Jonathan and Malcolm after they've met with Unya, where Jon is dealing with his guilt for earlier events and Malcolm offers him the insight he needs to come to terms with it: "That, in the deep of space, getting misrepresented and misinterpreted all the time... our very humanness saved a Feyr life?" This line just hits home perfectly, and that it is Malcolm reminding Jonathan of it seems both appropriate and indicative of the depth and quality of their relationship as it has developed over time, hastened by their experience on this world.

I see the pollen here as a catalyst for a latent relationship – each man had acknowledged the attraction to himself, but neither had made the first move toward acting on it.

Throughout the whole experience they're being open and honest with one another, and I love the small moments and touches and silent communication between them.

I just reread the whole story, enjoying it again! I’m not a big fan of horror themes in general, but this is genuinely unsettling without being completely terror inducing. It just keeps pulling you in further and further, and I was so glad to see them get out of there safely!

I love the relationship between Malcolm and Jon. They need each other, much as Malcolm doesn’t want to admit it, and they draw strength and reassurance from each other. I think it’s really telling that they only seem to rest well when in contact or close proximity. I think it’s more than UST – they really do care about each other. To each of them, the thought of losing the other was devastating.

There is something interesting in Jon’s speech patterns that I noticed when I first read both this and the first western story. It’s almost like he’s wearing a ‘one of the guys’ persona when he’s using the vernacular, i.e. expressions like ‘ain’t’. But he shifts into a more sophisticated pattern and vocabulary when he’s trying to figure something out or explain something. It seems to fit with his obvious education, and also with his need to put a lot of that behind him in the life he’s living now.

Thanks so much for sharing this!
