An outstanding piece in every way. Very emotional, but not overdone. Congratulations! First rate.

This does define the deep, fraternal relationship between Trip and Archer, fraught with disagreements, yet always tethered to a loyal, strong line that keeps both of them sane.

You write a beautiful scene that adds depth to their friendship.

Author's Response:

Thanks very much! I'm really glad that their friendship comes through clearly despite their difficult situation.

I fully enjoyed the story but I need to take it as an AU somewhat based on a couple of things.

1.  Jon isn't sure that Phlox is a psychitrist.  In 'Night in Sickby' that was made clear to him.

2.  The idea that Trip helped Jon through the pain when his father died. In "First Flight," it inferes (although doesn't state) that Henry Archer is already dead.  That's when Archer met Trip so if that's true, then Trip couldn't have helped him.  In fairness, more specific information wasn't revealed until season 4 in regards to Henry Archer's death and that wasn't handled well by the writers ('Cold Station 12' indicated that Jon was 12 when he died and 'Daedalus' stated that it was just before he started flight school.  Clearly there is a conflict as to what happened unless Jon started flight school at age 12.)  In either of those cases, Jon wouldn't have met Trip yet which would be in line with "First Flight."

3.  Although (again the OOC is due to when the story was written) this doesn't read as the Jonathan Archer of the Expanse.  For better or worse, Jon became a self absorbed Captain Ahab.  It was obvious he cared about Trip during the 'Similitude' but the way he showed it wouldn't have allowed the beautiful scenes you wrote.

However, from the viewpoint of an AU this was an excellent and enjoyble story.  Thanks for sharing it!

Author's Response:

Thanks very much for your review - I'm glad you liked the story.

Yes, this is a period piece, written before any of S3 began, as my immediate response to "The Expanse". I didn't want to rewrite it after the fact - it was very much of the moment. This isn't a pair of muses that I hear from very often, and I still liked it upon rereading it recently so I thought I'd share it.

The canon is definitely conflicting about the date of Henry Archer's death - and I still choose to believe that he lived longer than that (I really really disliked the way it was thrown in there in S4 - "Daedalus" contained some of the most OOC Archer I've seen written anywhere, IMHO, and I think Jonathan's father being part of his life for longer than age 12 is very much more in keeping with the character of the man he became).

And while my personal view of S3 Jonathan is S3 is less harsh than "Captain Ahab", I agree that this story probably wouldn't have happened later, given canon – particularly early in the Expanse, before Jon starting realizing that this mission was more complicated than it had first appeared (which in my mind really happened in "The Shipment".) I do think the friendship between Jon and Trip was a major casualty in S3, probably with blame on both sides, given how it all played out.

But I'm always fine with AU and am glad you enjoyed it despite that. :)

Ohhh... this is just lovely, mareel! Gave me goosebumps all over. Just they way this whole story plays out, from the crews concern to the captain's intervention. I really loved the intimacy of Jon holding Trip's hand in the ready room. Just a simple touch to show how he cares for his friend.

Beautiful! Thank you for posting it!

Author's Response:

Thanks so much!  I'm really glad you enjoyed it and that it struck a chord with you. I haven't written a lot about this friendship, and wanted to share this one, even though it isn't new.

It would have been really nice to see something like this on screen.

Author's Response:

Yes, it really would have been, preferably not long after they began the mission.
