Your Playlist at Random

Postby Misplaced » Mon Jan 10, 2011 5:46 pm

So, I'm curious if everyone is just as eclectic as me when it comes to music. Open up your media player and set it to random (or shuffle), then list the first 10 that come up (NO SKIPPING!)

If you're like me, and you've got hundreds of songs on your player... you can take more than one turn at this fun (no double-posting, though). Let's share music! I'm looking to expand my horizons.

Here's my random 10:

1. Fade Into You -- Mazzy Star
2. What About Now -- Daughtry
3. I Do Not Belong -- Kutless (Yes, that's Christian Rock :P )
4. Is It Any Wonder -- Keane
5. Hung Up -- Madonna
6. Big Girls Don't Cry -- Fergie
7. To Make You Feel My Love -- Garth Brooks
8. Boston -- Augustina
9. All the Right Moves -- OneRepublic
10. Sad Song -- Blake Lewis

This doesn't even come close to representing what I listen to. My player didn't even pull up my 80's songs, nor my hard, hard rock. :P

So what's good to your ears? Share!

So true. Most of my favourite EBM, aggrotech, industrial, synthpop and electronica didn't pop up at all, but I did get a couple of my top bands on the first go, including one of my two favourite bands of all time.

End of Flowers - Diary of Dreams
(Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I - Elvis Presley/The Jordanaires
Carry Out (feat. Justin Timberlake) - Timbaland
Sail Away - The Rasmus
Who Killed Mr. Moonlight - Bauhaus
Somebody - Depeche Mode
Twist - Underworld
Machineries of Joy - Die Krupps
I Changed My Name - Sugarcult
Racing Chocobo ~ Place your Bets - Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy VII OST)

I like how well it represents where the majority of my music comes from; two German bands, three British, three American, one other European (Finnish) and one Japanese composer. It's an extremely accurate microcosm of the nationality trends in my tastes.

The Ferry –  Dougie Maclean
I Bruise Easily - Natasha Bedingfield
Fear a' Bhàta - Capercaillie
Dying - Five for Fighting
Five Bridges To Cross - Alan Reid
On Your Shore - Enya
Song for a Winter's Night - Sarah McLachlan
Nessun Dorma - Amici Forever
An Aisling - Mairi MacInnes
I'll Stand By You - Pretenders

Reasonably representative, though it leaves a lot out.

First, this is a great way to find new music! Can we do this on a regular basis, especially if we can find links to the songs online? I only discover great music and musicians through other people or through listening to obscure tags on last.fm et al.

Secondly, this is also a reminder that I need to find a day to go through my thousands of tracks and remove things I don't want on there. At some point my son's music and mine got mixed in, so while I adore a lot of the same things he likes, some of them are annoying or I skip (YTMND Soundtrack comes to mind). He did introduce me to JPop and Linkin Park, though.

I've stayed true to the meme, but crossed off things that aren't mine. Hence, I went through about 20 things to get to the ten I listen to.

[s]1) Big Bar Fight -- Firefly Soundtrack
2) Spank My Booty -- Lords of Acid (YTMND Soundtrack)
3) A Morning in Norkia -- Last Exile OST[/s]
1) Hurt Mutant -- Climber
2) Kiwi -- Maroon 5
[s]6) Serenity, Low Life Vultures Picking the Flesh (Greg Edmonson, Firefly Complete Score)[/s]
3) Don't Tell Me -- Avril Lavigne
4) Someone Saved My Life Tonight -- Elton John
5) Original Sin -- Elton John
[s]10) Carbon Monoxide -- Regina Spektor
11) Our Mrs. Reynold's, Jayne Wants to Trade (Greg Edmonson, Firefly Complete Score)
12) Sailor Song -- Regina Spektor[/s]
6) Who Needs to Dream -- Barry Manilow
7) Who Loves You -- Allanah Myles
8) One More Time -- Daft Punk
[s]16) To West Texas -- Explosions in the Sky, Friday Night Lights
17) Life is a Highway -- Rascall Flats, Cars Soundtrack[/s] <-- this could count, I like the song
[s]18) Another Firefly thing[/s]
9) Cats on Mars -- The Seatbelts, Cowboy Beebop Soundtrack
[s]20) Some synthesizer sampler with no artist, ew[/s]
10) True -- Ryan Cabrera

BTW, my son will be 21 this month, and we've been sharing music since he was... 14? So, it's eclectic!

2. "Work for Love" - Ministry
3. "Gallows Pole" - Led Zeppelin
4. "Cut Your Hair" - Pavement
5. "Waterloo" - ABBA
6. "Slip of the Tongue" - Kenny G. (don't judge me! )
7. "Boy's Gone Crazy" - Was (Not Was)
8. "WDPK 83.7" - Daft Punk
9. "Why Does this Always Happen To Me?" - Weird Al Yankovic

This is so much fun, I"m going again:

1. Xtc - Earn Enough for Us
2. Pete Yorn - Sense
3. Nick Drake - Things Behind the Sun
4. Crowded House - Locked Out
5. Happy Mondays - Step on On
6. Tracy Chapman - Behind the Wall
7. They Might Be Giants - Particle man
8. Sufjan Stevens - In this Temple As in the Hearts
9. John Butler Trip - Zebra
10. Lady Gaga - Just Dance

Now this one TOTALLY does NOT represent a lot of my musical tastes. No meditation or yoga music. No grunge. No country/folk (Sufjan Stevens doesn't count). But I do love XTC! :)

Yes! We can definitely go more than once. I have over 500 songs on my itunes currently (though I actually have over 2000 songs on my computer--hubs used to be an event DJ before joining the Army) 10 songs are not going to be anywhere near representative of our musical tastes, I'm sure... which is why we're allowed to go again, and again, and again!

I share songs with my kids too (and funny enough, this time my itunes pulled up some of their songs)! And I also find new music more often from other people's recs, or watching fan vids on youtube. Sometimes I'll google genres (ie -- "Best heartbreak songs") depending on my mood. I almost never listen to the radio anymore.

All right, my turn again (with links this time!):

1. This is Home -- Switchfoot
2. Poker Face -- Lady Gaga
3. Somebody Told Me -- The Killers
[s]4. Come Clean -- Hilary Duff[/s]
[s]5. Round & Round -- Selena Gomez & The Scene[/s]
4. Awake and Alive -- Skillet
5. The Luckiest -- Ben Folds
6. Fix You -- Coldplay
7. So Small -- Carrie Underwood
8. Hey Ya -- OutKast
9. Friday I'm In Love -- The Cure
10. Falling Down -- Duran Duran

Yep, still not close to indicative of the variety I listen to. But at least one of my country songs came up. :P
